Okoboji   Sports Camp 2018

This summer will be the 35th year for Okoboji Sports Camp.

We are changing our name because we are now offering 3 different

sports.  This basketball, volleyball and soccer camp is held at Camp

Okoboji in Milford, Iowa on the shores of beautiful West Lake

Okoboji.  Camp Okoboji is owned by the Congretional Members in

Iowa District West of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. The twenty

two beautiful acres of the camp will provide basketball facilities,

lodging and meals for the week of June 10 - 16, 2018.  Okoboji Sports Camp

is run by Mrs. Sheryl Deutsch and Mrs. Mandy Matthew.  Sheryl Deutsch is the Activities Director at Trinity Academy High School in Wichita, Kansas and Mandy Matthew is a hospice nurse in Omaha.  Between the two of us we have over 50 years of coaching experience.  We are continuing to have sessions on sport psychology.  Mr. Mark Cheney will be doing sport psychology sessions every day.  Mark is a teacher at Faith Lutheran in Las Vegas.  He has his masters in this area.  We enjoy having girls from Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota for this week of learning more about sports, relationships, fun and most importantly more about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The full time staff at Camp Okoboji provides our meals, life guards, snack bar and cabin maintenance.  The OSC staff plans, supervises and runs the sports camps.  During this week we spend 6 hours each day working on improving our individual and team skills in the great games of basketball, volleyball and soccer. In addition to ball, our group does group activities such as bible study, swim time, free time and evening activities.  Our evening activities include a treasure hunt, a trip to the amusement park, games of bingo, bunco and other fun things.  We end every evening with camp fire devotions.  These other activities make this camp different from other sport camps.  It provides an opportunity to build interpersonal relationships.  Our morning bible studies are written by Holy Cross Lutheran School teacher, Teri Vanwey of Wichita.  They are written to have all the girls participate each day in fun and different ways while learning more about Jesus.  Singing is also a big part of morning and evening devotion time.  Mandy Matthew is our song leader and teaches us lots of wonderful songs.

Personal attention is very important.  Our staff teaches fundamentals of every aspect of the game.  We also work on incorporating team concepts of the game.  Basketball, Volleyball and soccer  are very complex games and we work to break it down for every level of player.  We have an age range of campers who have completed the fourth through eighth grades.  We work very hard to make sure each age level improves and develops according to their needs.
